"Canine Good Neighbours can be counted on to present good manners at home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs."

- Canadian Kennel Club

Canine Good Neighbour is a certification that dogs of all breeds, sizes, and ages can attain by completing a 12-step, non-competitive test, which is part of a broader program to enhance community awareness of responsible dog ownership.

This test evaluates dogs on their skills in being a polite, friendly, and well-behaved member of the community and focuses on the handler and dog's relationship, as well as the dog's ability to stay focused, calm, and collected during a series of exercises with and without distractions.

Please note that this course is best suited for dogs that enjoy being around people and have a natural disposition for community and therapy work.

Our Canine Good Neighbour preparation course is intended for dogs who have completed previous levels of group training courses and prepares you and your dog for each of the below steps:

  • Accepting A Friendly Stranger

Dogs who have completed the Canine Good Neighbour course at Luv-A-K9 are eligible to join us for our Public Access course. The Public Access course is geared toward people that have an interest in working towards therapy dog work, have a service dog in training, or just want to work further on having a dog who is reliable in public situations, including stores. This course involves 3 weeks of in-class lessons and 3 weeks out in public in dog-friendly stores.

In this course, you will continue to work and expand on exercises you have learned in your Canine Good Neighbour and previous obedience classes as well as teach new behaviours that will be beneficial for when we head out into public. Some of the things you will learn in this course include how to navigate tight spaces, get your dog to ignore people, teach your dog to help pick things up if you drop them, advance your stays and waits, open access doors, learn a formal "go visit" command, and more!
